Probably one of the most important parts of any online business is analytics. You always want to know the statistics of your site. How will you know what to change or what to keep the same if you don’t know how many people are clicking on it?

There are TONS and TONS of analytics web tools. Some are free and some are hundreds or even thousands of dollars. Always remember, you get what you pay for.
That being said, I’m gonna show you how to use one of the best free tools available. I’m doing this for a couple of reasons. One, free is always better when you’re just starting out. Two, the more money you pay for one of these tools, the more it can do, which in turn, means the more confusing it can be if you’ve never use one before.

So, the tool I’m going to explain is Google Analytics. It is by FAR the best and easiest free analytics web tool available. You can start off by going to Google and typing in analytics. The first result will be the one you need to click on. If you don’t have a Google account, you will need to create one to use this tool.
Once you sign in, click Access Analytics and click the sign up button below. You’ll then be asked for your web site address, country and time zone. The next page will ask for your name and country and finally you’ll have to agree to the terms and service.
This is where it may get tricky for those of you who aren’t familiar with HTML. You’ll need to copy the code they give for you where it says, “Paste This Code”, and then open each page of your web site in your HTML editor and paste the code right before the tag which should be the second to last tag at the bottom.
Once you’ve done this on every page, you’re done setting up the Google Analytics Web Tool. It usually takes about 24 hours before Google completes the setup.
After the 24 hours, you can log in. There will be a green check mark under the status category if Google has completed the setup. On that same screen, you will see the name of site, how many visits you’ve had to your site and an average time of how long each visitor has stayed.
If you click “View Reports” under the reports category, it will take you to an overview of your traffic and it will show you where your traffic came from. If your visitors found your site from a search engine, it will show which keywords they typed in to find you. This can be one huge piece of information if you’re running a pay-per-click campaign (which is also merged with the analytics web tool).
